How to Fix a Chip in a Countertop Corner

    • 1). Rinse the chip with water to remove any broken bits from the chip and let the chipped area dry out. Stone Masters recommends cleaning chips in marble or rock countertops with acetone before repairing the chip.

    • 2). Attach a metal corner brace to the counter top if the chip in the corner is at the bottom of the counter. Use a brace that is an exact fit for the corner of the countertop and attach the brace to the underside of the counter with a screw or heavy-duty tape if you don't want a screw hole in the bottom of your counter, leaving just enough space between the corner of the counter and the brace to squeeze liquid down inside.

    • 3). Mix epoxy and hardener in the ratio indicated on the epoxy label in a disposable bowl. Use a disposable putty knife for mixing the epoxy and hardener and let the mixture stand for five to ten minutes to begin setting up.

    • 4). Apply the epoxy mix to the chip in the countertop with the putty knife, filling approximately 1/8-inch of the chip, or squeeze 1/8-inch of epoxy glue into the chip. Squeeze the epoxy in between the edge of the corner and the metal brace if the chip is at the bottom of the counter.Allow the epoxy mix or epoxy glue sit in the chip for five to 10 minutes to set up. Continuously stir the epoxy solution while the epoxy sits to prevent the mix from curing in the container.

    • 5). Add additional 1/8-inch layers of epoxy or epoxy glue to the chip and let it cure for five to 10 minutes between each layer until the chip is full. If the chip is at the bottom of the countertop and you are filling the corner brace to build-up the bottom of the corner, it may be difficult to tell when the chip is full. If you continue to fill the brace until it is roughly full, you can remove excess when you finish.

    • 6). Let the final layer of epoxy set up for 10 minutes and remove the brace from the countertop if you filled a bottom chip. Leave the epoxied chip sitting for one to two hours before touching it.

    • 7). Use a razor blade or paint scraper to carefully shave off the excess epoxy on the countertop. Hold the scraper perpendicular to the filled chip and sweep over it gently to remove layers of the epoxy at a time until the chip sits evenly with the counter.

    • 8). Dab a small amount of touch-up paint the same color as your countertop if the filled chip is still noticeable. Since the epoxy is transparent, it often blends well without need for painting.
