The successful completion of an electrical hobby project can bring joy to hobbyists due to the challenge it provides. Piecing together many projects and appliances that others often take for granted give the hobbyist an extreme sense of achievement. Anyone can become proficient at completing hobby projects--all it requires is a logical mind, a creative streak, and tenacity to construct electrical circuits. For someone with a passion for learning about the intricate nature of electricity, a variety of projects can be found.

    Battery Backup Circuits

    • Backup batteries for laptops and notebooks are a very practical source of energy when the main battery is being replaced. The time required to swap the main battery is in the range of 2 to 3 minutes and, hence, the backup circuit is not required to be too complex. Connecting a few coin cells together serves the purpose of being a bridge battery.

    Bug Detectors

    • Although the bug detectors used by intelligence agencies are highly sophisticated, hobbyists can always develop simpler versions of FM bugs. Once it is known that the bug is transmitting, its output power and other parameters can be adjusted to make it more efficient. Other bugs that listen in on a phone conversation can also be produced with some basic circuitry kits.

    Frequency Converter Circuits

    • A range of techniques can be used to convert a pulse to DC voltage or to modify the frequency of a signal to adapt to the requirements of a different circuit. A very good understanding of capacitors and inductors are helpful for any hobbyist planning to work on converter circuits.

    Infrared Jammer

    • This is one of the projects that can have mildly sinister uses like blocking the remote controlled surfing of channels. Since TV remotes use infrared signals, whenever the circuit releases a flood of infrared pulses, it corrupts the stream of data from the remote and makes it impossible for the receiver in the TV to decipher what information is transmitted.
