How to Grow Lodgepole Pine Trees
- 1). Find the right location. Lodgepole pine trees reach enormous heights and should be given extensive room to grow. Find a spacious location with 6 or more hours of sunlight a day and well-draining soil. Avoid areas near roads, sidewalks and utility wires.
- 2). Dig a hole as deep as the container and twice as wide. The hole should only be a few inches deeper than the root ball.
- 3). Place the tree in the center of the hole and fill in with original soil. Be sure the root ball is only buried 2-3 inches below the surface of the soil. Do not amend soil as this may cause the roots to stay within the root ball and not spread out evenly.
- 4). Firmly stamp on the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
- 5). Water the young pine immediately after planting. Continue to water your lodgepole pine once a week during its first year. Once established, lodgepole pines can subsist on rainfall alone.
- 6). Use a slow-release fertilizer formulated for pine trees. Lodgepole pines only need to be fertilized 2-3 times in their first year.
- 7). Protect your lodgepole pine from animals. Spread a wire cage close to the trunk of the tree or cover the bark with tree wrap to prevent animals from eating the bark.
