How to Change Photo Frames

    • 1). Turn the framed photo over so that it's face down. If the front of the frame is delicate, lay a towel down first and place the frame face down on the towel.

    • 2). Pry the tiny metal bars holding the photo's backing into the frame up, one at a time, with a butter knife. Start in one corner and work your way around the back of the frame until you can lift the photo backing out without bending or twisting it. On some frames you may not need to complete this step; removing the backing may be as simple as sliding it directly down and out the bottom of the frame.

    • 3). Work your fingertips under the edge of the photo and carefully lift it directly out of the frame. Pull slowly and carefully, working from one edge across to the other in case the photo has adhered at all to the front of the frame.

    • 4). Lay the new frame face down and remove the backing, just as you did for the old frame. Lay any matting you may have purchased to go with this frame into the frame, face down. Then add the photo.

    • 5). Lay the frame's backing in place and use the butter knife to bend the metal pins that hold it in place back down. If the frame is a simple slide-in model, just slide the frame's backing into place.

    • 6). Use a soft, damp cloth to polish any fingerprints off the front of the new picture frame before you set it in its new home.
