How to Plant a Forest Tree
- 1). Remove any logging debris or excessive brush from the planting site.
- 2). Plant seedlings as soon as possible after they are obtained. Place the seedlings in a cool, dark spot if they are to be stored for less than two weeks. Keep the roots moist. Place the seedlings in storage at a temperature of 35 to 37 degrees Fahrenheit if they must be kept for more than two weeks before planting.
- 3). Carry seedlings to the planting site in a bucket half-filled with water or wet moss. Avoid letting the seedlings' roots dry out before placing them into the ground.
- 4). Dig a planting hole with a grub hoe or mattock. Drive the hoe into the dirt, making sure all of the blade enters the soil. Lift the handle up 45 degrees to expose the hole. Place the seedling in the hole at a depth that the roots will be covered and the stems exposed. Release the grub hoe or mattock and allow the soil to fall back into the hole. Tamp down the dirt around the hole.
