    • 1). Turn the lighter upside down. On the bottom of the lighter there will be two covered openings. The larger of these is the fuel filler. Remove the slotted fuel-filler cap using a screw driver to turn and loosen it. Inside the filler hole is an absorbent material to hold the lighter fluid. If the lighter does not have a filler hole, keep the lighter upright and open the hinged top of the case. Remove the body of the lighter from the case by pulling it upward.

    • 2). Pour lighter fluid into the fuel filler hole or into the exposed absorbent material. Depending on the type of lighter, tilt the can of lighter fluid so the pour spout goes into the lighter filler hole or directly into the absorbent material in the lighter body. Allow fluid to flow into the lighter or the material. Stop pouring fuel as soon as it is no longer being absorbed. If you overfill the lighter, tilt it to pour out any unabsorbed fluid.

    • 3). Replace the filler cap or the body of the lighter. Use the screw driver to tighten the cap on the filler hole. If the lighter did not have a filler hole, replace the body into the lighter by pushing it into the case. Wipe any excess lighter fluid off the lighter and wash your hands to remove any fluid that might have spilled before attempting to ignite the lighter.

    • 4). Test the lighter. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to light the lighter. If it does not light, the flint or flint wheel may have gotten wet during refilling. Set the lighter aside to dry. It should light once it has dried.
