Faces fit into one of four basic shapes: round, triangular, square or oval. Round faces appear circular, with a rounded chin. Triangular faces are wider through the forehead and narrow in the chin region. Square faces feature a broad forehead and squared-off jaw. Oval faces are well-balanced, longer than they are wide with a rounded chin and forehead. - Squared eyeglasses flatter round faces.Black eyeglasses on white background image by Olga Khopshanosova from Fotolia.com
Once you have assessed your facial shape look for eyeglass frames in a contrasting shape. For example, if your face is round, try on frames that are rectangular and wider than they are tall. Designs with straight lines provide a contrast on rounder faces. Triangular faces do well with small squared or rounded frames or rimless styles. Oval and round frames soften the appearance of a square face, while balanced, oval shaped faces can carry any frame design with style. - Eyeglass color should coordinate with your wardrobe.eyeglasses on fabric background image by JoLin from Fotolia.com
Keep in mind the colors that you wear most often as you select a color for the frames of the eyeglasses. If you wear warm, earthy colors, frames in the brown or gold family will look best. If you tend to wear purples, blues and greens, look for frames in shades of dark blue, silver or gray. When in doubt, choose a basic black.
Or you may choose a frame color that matches the color of your eyes, such as selecting brown frames to match brown eyes. - Glasses should not rest on cheeks while you are smiling.smiling woman image by Marylin from Fotolia.com
Eyeglasses should not extend above the natural eyebrow line. The overall size of the frames should be in proportion to the size of the face and features. Do not choose big frames for a small face with petite features or tiny eyeglasses for a large face. The bottom of the frames should not sit on your cheeks where they may cause discomfort. Try a smile and other facial expressions while wearing the eyeglasses to determine how well they fit.
