How to Install Owens Corning Fiberglass Batt Insulation in the Ceiling
- 1). Verify that the Owens Corning fiberglass batt insulation is the width required for insulation. If the insulation is not the correct width, it won’t stay in place. Alternatively, if it is too wide, it will loose its R-value if you compress it in place.
- 2). Set-up the scaffolding to access the ceiling. Using a scaffolding will allow you to walk the length of the batt without having to move your ladder each time. Owens Corning batt insulation comes in lengths of 93 to 96 inches. Climb the scaffolding and measure the distance between rafters. This is the measurement for the insulation width.
- 3). Position yourself atop the scaffolding and install the first batt of Owens Corning batt insulation. Place the insulation in the cavity between rafters starting at one end and working to the other. If the insulation has paper or foil on one side, this should face the room.
- 4). Gently press against the insulation and tuck it in the space. Ensure that the insulation is smooth and in place.
- 5). Smooth the face of the insulation by running your hand across it. Make any quick adjustments so that it is not compressed. The insulation should have the look of a plumb and tidy bed.
- 6). Pull the tabs free from the edge of the insulation and staple them against the inside of the rafter or the edge that faces the room, depending on what works best for the size of the insulation and the rafter depth.
- 7). Repeat this for every cavity in the ceiling.
- 8). Unroll a polyethylene vapor barrier and staple it in place once the insulation is installed. Don’t stretch this taut, but ensure that it is smooth, as well. Staple against the rafter edges facing the room. While insulation resists heat flow, it doesn't resist air flow. A vapor diffuser retarder performs this function while also retarding water vapor flow at the same time.
- 9). Finish the ceiling with the desired material, wood, paneling or sheetrock.
