How to Build a Secret Compartment Into a Drawer
- 1). Measure the length of the drawer. The length is the space from the inside front of the drawer to the inside back.
- 2). Cut two pieces of 1- by 2-inch lumber at the length measured in Step 1. Drill three pilot holes on the wide side of the lumber with the 1/16th-inch drill bit. Drill a countersink hole on each of the pilot holes 3/8th-inch deep.
- 3). Measure from the inside bottom of the drawer and make marks on the drawer sides representing the desired depth of the secret compartment. Apply glue to the wide side of the 1- by 2-inch pieces and secure to the inside of the drawer sides with the wood screws.
- 4). Measure between the two 1- by 2s inside the drawer and cut two 1- by 2s to that length. Drill three pilot holes on the wide side of the lumber with the 1/16th-inch drill bit. Drill a countersink hole on each of the pilot holes 3/8th-inch deep.
- 5). Apply glue to the wide side of the boards and install them between the two pieces already installed with the wood screws. Measure the width and length of the inside of the drawer and cut a piece of 1/4th-inch plywood to that size.
- 6). Sand the edges of the plywood with 100-grit sandpaper to make them smooth. Insert it into the drawer and let it rest on the 1 by 2s.
