How to Do Hardy Hibiscus Division by Cutting
- 1). Water the hardy hibiscus well two to three days before you want to divide them. Add 1 inch of water to the plants.
- 2). Cut the hibiscus down to 6 inches above the ground with a pair of scissors before you divide them to make them easier to move.
- 3). Dig a wide hole around the hardy hibiscus plant at least 4 feet in diameter so you don't cut into the root ball. Lift the root ball out of the ground.
- 4). Determine how many pieces you can cut the hardy hibiscus into. If the root ball is 8 to 10 inches large, cut it into three to four divisions. If the root ball is smaller, cut it into two divisions. Use a sharp knife to cut the root ball into equal-sized parts.
- 5). Dig holes as deep as the new root balls and two times as wide. Place the hardy hibiscus into the holes with the root side facing down into the hole and fill the holes with soil. Water the new division well for three to five minutes.
