    • 1). Lay the log on the ground on its side.

    • 2). Cut the log in half with a chain saw. Try to cut is as closely down the middle as possible. If it will make it easier for you to be accurate, mark a cut line with a piece of chalk.

    • 3). Pick the half of the log that you like best and set it, bark side down, on your work table.

    • 4). Lay a circular saw blade on the exposed wood and trace around it with a pencil. Mark the center by making a mark through the center hole of the blade. Cut around the traced line with a band saw. Make a cut on the bottom of the log so that you have a flat base.

    • 5). Find the center of the bottom (the bark side) of the log and attach a screw-on chuck. Turn the wood over.

    • 6). Fasten the wood onto the lathe by fastening it to the screw-on chuck on the bottom of the wood. Make sure the tail stock is firmly against the bottom of the wood.
