Planting With Rabbit Manure

    • 1). Obtain rabbit manure. To obtain the rabbit manure for your garden, you can buy pre-bagged manure from an online retailer (see Resources), talk to a farmer who raises rabbits in your area about buying manure direct from him, or, if you have your own rabbits at home, gather the droppings yourself.

    • 2). Spread fresh rabbit manure directly over the garden in fall after the summer growing season. Since manure is entirely organic and will break down, the amount of manure you use is up to you. If you buy a 5-lb. bag of rabbit manure, for instance, you can use the entire bag on your garden. If you only have a few pellets from the cage of your pet rabbit, adding this small amount can also be beneficial.

    • 3). Allow the manure to sit untouched throughout the winter. Leaving the manure to sit allows it to age, which allows any dangerous pathogens in the manure to escape.

    • 4). Till or rake the soil where you have spread manure so that the manure mixes down into the first 6 inches or so. Do this in the spring, approximately a month before planting your garden, per PlanTea.

    • 5). Plant your garden as usual. The nutrients in the rabbit manure become nutrients in the soil, providing plants with extra nitrogen and phosphorous.
