Opportunities to install wood trim exist in almost every room of your house. Wood trim can provide the extra note of elegance or rustic appeal that your home needs to feel complete, and can be relatively inexpensive to purchase. Once installed, wood trim may also increase the value of your home, providing a monetary return on your investment. - Crown molding is used at the point where the walls of a room meet the ceiling to break up the room's long lines and provide some aesthetic appeal. This style of molding is essentially a continuous strip of wood or other material that runs around the entire room. The wood used in this trim style can be deceptively simple or ornately carved; decorative trim is often used in a room with high ceilings. According to home carpentry website Just Moulding, prefabricated wood crown molding can be found in a variety of styles and is easily affordable.
- Baseboards are installed where the walls meet a room's floor to provide the wall protection from scratches and other abrasions that could occur from furniture rubbing against it. Moldings made from real wood are often produced in a style called "finger joining," which utilizes a continuous piece of material to present a clean, undamaged surface. Baseboards can be purchased in simple styles without ornate flourishes or in intricate patterns, like clam shell molding. Baseboards can also easily be painted since most have no visible grain.
- Wainscoting is a trim technique of covering the lower half of a wall with a solid wood or fiberboard trim. This trim style can incorporate a variety of pattern styles that can be dictated by the wood you choose to use in a given room. Wainscoting also provides an extra layer of protection for the actual wall and can easily be removed should you choose to remodel.
- Wooden door trim is used to cover the rough cutting lines created when a door is installed into a room. The trim also provides an aesthetically appealing look to the door and can give a room a finished appearance. Wood used for this style of interior trim can range from plain-looking pine board to finely carved oak panels.
