Cake Cutting Tools
- A variety of cake knives are available to slice cakes of different size and consistency. Some larger knives have handles at both ends for control; others have thin edges and hollow blades to slide through cakes without creating a crumby mess.
- Large bow-shaped wire cutters are made to be pressed into cakes for a straight-line slice. The thin wires are drawn tight across a steel bow, creating a tool that will make a clean, precise cut.
- Thin, sticky cakes can be cut with a wheel knife like those used to slice pizza. The moving wheels cut soft cakes while causing minimal damage. The wheel can be sprayed with cooking oil to further reduce sticking.
- Metal rulers are often used in cake cutting to precisely measure and mark even portions. The edge of the clean ruler is softly pressed into the icing on the surface of the cake to act as a guide for slicing.
- Offset cake-serving spatulas are sold in sets with cake knives for fancy presentation at formal events. Experienced cake cutters, however, prefer using a gloved hand to place pieces of cake on plates because it is faster and they're less likely to drop a piece.
