• The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14. A pH of 1 is the most acidic and pH 14 is most alkaline.
  
  

Function

• Most plant life prefers a neutral pH. However, grass prefers a slightly acidic soil with a ph value between 6.5 and 7.0. When soil has a high pH, it is too alkaline and grass seeds may have difficulty germinating.
  
  

Significance

• When a seed is planted, it is exposed to a host of soil pathogens before it germinates. A speedier germination increases the likelihood that seeds will escape a fatal attack from soil-borne pathogens. Once seeds emerge as young plants, their survival is still dependent on having the correct growing conditions.
  
  

Identification

• Purchase a soil testing kit to test your soil's pH. Soil testing kits are readily available at local nurseries and garden supply stores. These at-home kits are easy to use and give an accurate pH reading.
  
  

Solution

• If the pH of soil is not in the recommended range, it should be corrected. Soil adjuvants to adjust pH are readily available at garden supply stores. High pH soils are usually corrected by adding sulphur or ammonium. However, you can also use other acidifiers such as aluminum sulphate.
