How to Blend Acrylic Paints When Painting a Picture

    • 1). Squeeze a nickel-size amount of acrylic paint onto your palette or mixing tray. Choose a few colors in addition to white.

    • 2). Dip your brush into one of the colors and apply it to the canvas or the surface you're painting on.

    • 3). Dip your brush into the white acrylic paint without rinsing it out after using the original color. Apply the brush near the area where you painted with the original color and, using fluid strokes in a windshield wiping pattern, slowly blend the white paint on your brush into the colored paint already on the canvas.

    • 4). Blend the white paint into the color. The two will mix, producing a shade lighter than the original.

    • 5). Experiment with blending by using any dark color and any light color other than white to add more variety to your painting. Blending red and yellow will produce shades of orange while blending red and white will produce shades of pink.
