    Terra-cotta

    • Terra-cotta containers come in many shapes and sizes and work with just about any landscape. These containers, made of porous clay, allow the soil to breathe. Terra-cotta containers keep the soil cool and dry out any excess moisture in the plants. However, these fragile containers sometimes easily break. This is especially evident in the event of a frost. Another shortcoming of these containers is they can dry out quite quickly especially in sunny areas. However, using a glazed terra-cotta pot can remedy this problem.

    Plastic

    • Plastic containers are always a good choice for your plants. They last a long time and are usually inexpensive. You can find plastic containers in many styles to compliment your landscape. They are also fairly lightweight making it easy to re-arrange your garden. If you plan to place your plastic containers in a sunny area, don't chose a dark-colored container because they absorb heat and will dry out your plants. Instead, opt for light-colored containers that reflect light allowing your plants to retain moisture.

    Concrete

    • Use concrete containers for planting large plants or trees. They provide needed support to contain larger plants. These containers also possess good insulation and do a good job of protecting the root systems of plants because it maintains a stable soil environment. Choose wisely where you want to place your concrete container, as they are usually too heavy to move. You can leave concrete planters outside in the winter without any problem. They withstand the elements and do a good job of protecting the roots of the plants.

    Wood

    • Wood containers look good with any landscape, as well as being lightweight. These containers hold moisture well. Pick wood containers made out of rot-resistant woods such as redwood or cedar. If you choose containers made of soft woods like pine, be sure they are painted with a nontoxic paint to avoid rot.
