How to Become CPR & First Aid Certified
- 1). Inquire at work about the possibility of CPR and first aid training. Often, employers require or encourage staff to have this training and will offer it free or at a reduced price.
- 2). Check with local health-care providers in the community. Hospitals, nursing homes and emergency medical services agencies all require staff to hold current CPR and first aid training. Most conduct their own classes and allow members of the public to enroll for a nominal fee. Be sure the fee covers the cost of training material.
- 3). Locate an American Heart Association or American Red Cross chapter in the community or visit them on the web. Both organizations offer classes that fit any schedule.
- 4). Register for the CPR and first aid class and pay course fees. Most courses will not allow same-day registration.
- 5). Attend the training. The course will last from four to six hours and consist of a variety of lecture, video instruction, and live demonstration by the instructor. Students will also need to demonstrate proficiency with all skills.
- 6). Pass a written exam with 20 questions and demonstrate proficiency at a variety of skills stations. These may include adult and child CPR, controlling bleeding, using an Epi-pen and managing a choking victim. In total, the exam will last approximately one hour.
