How to Install Milliken Carpet Tile
- 1). Remove old carpeting, if present, from the floor and discard, along with any carpet tacking strips. Sweep, vacuum and mop the floor to eliminate all debris. Allow the floor to dry completely.
- 2). Insert a thumbtack halfway into the floor in the corner at each end of one wall. Attach the free end of a chalk line to one thumbtack, stretch the line to the opposite diagonal corner, then snap the string to leave a line of chalk. Repeat the chalk line process using the second thumbtack as an anchor.
- 3). Measure one wall and the wall opposite with a tape measure. Divide the total number of inches by 2 to find the center and partially insert a thumbtack to mark the spot. Measure the remaining two walls and mark the center. Using the chalk line, snap chalk marks from the center thumbtacks of opposite walls. Remove all thumbtacks.
- 4). Identify the direction of the carpet nap by locating the arrows on the back of each carpet tile. Start at the point where the chalk lines intersect and lay one tile at a time along one of the center lines toward the wall, keeping the arrows pointed in the same direction. Lay another row of carpet tiles, starting from the initial tile, toward the next nearest wall. Continue filling in one quarter of the room with carpet tiles before proceeding to the next quadrant.
- 5). Flip a carpet tile upside down to mark a cutting line to fill in gaps between the already-installed tiles and the wall. Make sure the arrow is pointed in the opposite direction of the existing tiles when it is turned over. Mark the cut line with a marker pen. Using a metal straightedge ruler for guidance, cut the tile from the back side with a utility knife. Flip the cut piece of tile right side up and set into position to fill the gap.
