How to Trim Satsuma Trees
- 1). Rub off suckers as they appear on the lower part of the trunk. Suckers are sprouts of new growth that are generally from the rootstock. Suckers sap energy from the tree. If the suckers are too large to rub off with your hand, use shears to snip them off, level with the trunk.
- 2). Cut out dead and weak branches. Satsuma wood is generally quite strong, but occasionally you will find spindly, weak twigs and branches. Remove branches that cross others -- these may cut into the wood of the other branch, allowing the entrance of boring pests.
- 3). Remove diseased wood by cutting it back until you see healthy tissue. Healthy wood is a whitish-yellow color.
