Special education teachers work with students who have special educational needs, such as learning disabilities, physical and mental disabilities and autism. If you want to become a special education teacher, the first step is to obtain an undergraduate degree in special education. - Georgia College & State University offers a bachelor's degree program in special education. This four-year program is designed to qualify students to begin teaching. Classes are taught using the cohort method, in which small groups of students study and work together under the supervision of experienced faculty. The school's program is nationally recognized by the Council for Exceptional Children.

gcsu.edu - Vanderbilt University's Peabody College offers a four-year special education degree program that's designed to train students to work with disabled children in school settings. Students interested in pursuing a license to teach non-disabled children can also do so.
This interdisciplinary program requires students to work with special populations in internship settings while taking academic classes. Students can concentrate in one of five areas: mild to moderate disabilities, moderate to severe disabilities, visual impairment, hearing impairment, or early childhood education.

Students work towards earning qualification to teach special education students at the primary or secondary school level. However, the program does not offer courses in working with specific disabled populations.
