How to Make Picture Cards for a Speech Delayed Child
- 1). Spend the day with your child and record important phrases and words that are commonplace in your home. Write down the words in a notebook. Include objects, people and activities.
- 2). Draw a line down the center of a piece of card stock, with the paper in a vertical direction. Fold the paper into thirds, making three horizontal folds across the vertical line down the center.
- 3). Cut the six squares out of the card stock paper. Each card will include one photo. To save paper, attach a related photo to the opposite side of the card.
- 4). Create picture cards for each immediate family member, including the family pets. Add picture cards for other family members the child may see often. Use real family photos to help the child recognize each person.
- 5). Take photos of everyday household objects. Start with the list of words you created earlier. Supplement the initial list by going from room to room and taking other photos that are important. For example, photograph a fork in the kitchen and a blanket in the bedroom. Remember to include a photo of the toilet for the potty training child.
- 6). Expand the picture cards by printing photos you find online and adding them to the set. For example, print out images of the child's favorite TV characters. Also use images from magazines. Magazines are a good source of common food images including milk, fruit and cheese.
- 7). Cover each card with a piece of clear laminate to protect the cards. Keep the cards in a place that is accessible to the child. Add new picture words as the child's needs and wants change.
