Media infiltrates nearly every aspect of a typical student's life. From television, movies and music to YouTube, social media networks and advertising on every corner, it is impossible for students interested in creating their own media projects to not find inspiration. Starting a media project is not the simplest of tasks, but a crisp and exciting idea combined with an organized team can definitely make it happen. - Students with home camcorders or high-quality webcams can shoot short comedy or spoof scenes and invite the student body and their families to watch and comment online. It can be in the vein of a documentary or mock-umentary, or perhaps as a student body “video diary” or weekly campus news show in the style of “Entertainment Tonite” or “The Soup.” Another option is to have a few students dress up as members of the faculty and make the videos into a web series.
- Incoming freshmen can interview the graduating class for a senior class video where the graduating students share insightful and inspiring tidbits on what got them through high school and into college. The video can feature interviews of the valedictorian, class president, school newspaper editor or any other students who have been both A-students and active in extra-curricular activities. Freshman or other underclassmen can also interview members of faculty or parents if they wish. After the video is edited, it can be shown during a special school assembly.
- Organize an assembly that features students who are members of the school choral or glee groups. They can perform songs reworded to include campus life, or they can be popular songs with the videos of the original performers playing on screens on the sides of the stage. Incorporate high-quality side and floor lighting to give the performance a real musical theater feel.
- Host an evening in the gym with a mix of music from student singers and bands and exhibit student art, film and photography. It can showcase the work of students in all grade levels in one evening or be divided up over the duration of the week. Encourage students to use multiple types of media in their projects, such as live musical performances with a cell phone ring-tone as part of the beat. Consider having an awards ceremony at the end of the night or the end of the week for the Best Of in each media category.
