The Easiest Way to Cut out Two-Inch Blocks for Quilting
- 1). Wash and iron the fabric. Always pre-wash all fabric before cutting or sewing to prevent the colors from leaking on one another, and to accommodate any shrinking that may occur. When the fabric is dry, iron out any creases.
- 2). Lay the fabric on your cutting mat, placing the topmost edge in the corner of the mat. Place the fabric with the right side (the nice side) facing down.
- 3). Place a clear plastic ruler over the top of the fabric and use your rotary cutter to make an even corner. Put the blade against the side of the ruler and push it away from you.
- 4). Mark off a 2-inch square. Now the factory edges of the corner of the square have been leveled, use a fabric pen or marker to draw two small marks on either side of the corner of the ruler at the 2 1/4-inch mark.
- 5). Hold your ruler firmly in place with one hand and use the rotary blade to carefully cut out the square. When cutting fabric, always press down on the ruler to prevent it from slipping. You now have a 2 1/4-by-2 1/4-inch square that, when sewn, will be a 2-by-2-inch square.
