How to Make Plywood Furniture
The Best Free Plywood Furniture Plans
Have you had a bit of experience with woodworking and wondered how to make furniture out of plywood? Its readily available, not too expensive and can look very nice. A great project to improve your home - we have quite a few really great things in our house made from plywood
Making furniture is an art, no doubt about it. My husband is out in the workshop for hours fiddling at this or that - or maybe just avoiding any turmoil in the house. Who can say.
He has, however made some very lovely furniture. Some fairly simple in design and some more complex. He largely fugures out the designs himself and draws them out, but if you don't have the inclination there are very good ones on-line.
Here are the best plywood furniture designs and instructions.
These shelves are really easy to make and only need plywood, some strips of wood and some screws. They look really nice as well and are quite strong. The plans are on instructibles by juliofo (so is the picture)
They are also very strong for such a simple design. If you read more on the article you will see a lot of good pictures which show fairly heavy things stored on them.
Trestle tables are extremely versatile. Here are free plans for a trestle table made primarily from plywood - it only takes plywood, a bit of lumber and dowels. This type of table is very flexible. The nice thing is that you can disassemble it if you are moving or if you want to use it as a camp table.
Chairs look complicated but the right design makes it fairly easy for you to make your own from plywood. This is a simple chair made from half a sheet of plywood and some dowels. To put it together you just need a jigsaw and a drill. The plans are free and you just download them. Happens to also be a really nice looking chair.
Take a look at this shelf. This has to be just about the coolest shelf I've seen for some time. You can make it usning only one sheet of plywood and some screws. This plan is a little more complicated that some others - after all if you don't get the waves right I don't think it would look very good. On the other hand you would have learned something and only wasted one sheet of plywood if it does not work out. So why not give it a try.
This really attractive media centre can also be made from just 2 sheets of plywood, some dowels and screws. As with the wave shelf, this one is a little more complicated, but just read all directions carefully before you start and you should be just fine.
Why do I love these insturctions and this furniture? Early on I became fascinated with the idea of furniture that you can take apart and put back together. I suppose it had to do with my early nomadic life during university. I know we are all familiar with that Swedish store - but some of their items take quite a bit of fiddling to get the furniture together.
I though that there has to be an easier wy and have struggled with the idea to no avail for quite some time. When I came across these various plans I had to share. It is just great that some of them become flat peices of wood to transport. This has to be the answer to the plastic thorw away stuff we see everywhere.
Plywood is also economial. I always seem to be on a budget so that aspect is very important to me
. On the other hand, we can't live forever with board and brick bookshelves can we. University ends and we want something a little more upscale. I have made a number of shelves using plywood - they all look great and work well. lately we made the check out counter for our garden center using plywood - a variation of a box on its side, but really useful.
The most rustic and simple of chairs can still be comfortable. This chair is made from four peices of 24 inch square plywood. The beauty is that there are no screws or anything else. So this is another great option for camping. Just put them together when you get there.
There are some pretty good pages on the web that require a membership but also give you superior information on woodworking topics - FineWoodWorking is one of them. It is their on-line version of the magazine. The site at this link has a lot of really good information about plywood itself. User's Guide to Plywood
