According to Pharmacists, half the people buying Painkillers are probably misusing them-or any other Prescription Drug for that matter.
Prescription Drugs and Marijuana is probably the most commonly used Drugs amongst teens these days.
The statistics for teens abusing Prescription Drugs are so high due to the fact that 50% of teens believe that it's safer than Illegal Drugs.
The truth however is that taking these Drugs-even if prescribed for a medical condition-can indeed lead to dependence.
In some cases, the dangers of Painkillers won't surface until much later-when it might be too late.
In 2007 there was a Painkiller that was the cause of over 1000 deaths and was found to be 30-50 times stronger than Heroin.
You see, Painkillers are designed to interfere with the nervous system's transmission of the nerve signals that we normally perceive as pain.
A lot of these Painkillers also stimulates a portion of the brain.
Which is why they don't only block pain, but they create a high as well.
The most powerful of them all is known as Opioids-they are manufactured to react on the nervous system the same way that Drugs like Heroin works.

Just like any other Drug, once you stop using the Painkillers-after long-term use-you will have withdrawals as well.
Painkiller don't cure anything, thy simply act as a mask for the pain for which they are taken for.
Someone who continuously takes Painkillers to dull pain will end up having to take more and more due to the fact that the body will build up tolerance to the Drug.

One of the more serious risks is Respiratory Depression-one can eventually stop breathing and die.

As Addicts from other Drugs comes into Recovery, Painkillers are Drugs that they still need to stay away from, as this can very easily lead them back to their Drug of choice, or essentially just cross-addicting to a different Drug.
In my opinion, a Drug is Drug, whether it is Alcohol, Cocaine, Painkillers or Marijuana.
Once Addicts start to separate all of these, they open the door to other Drugs that they might not have taken in the past, and will then never be able to stay in Recovery and stay clean.
