Wood Vs. Steel Homes
- While some state that using wood is more environmentally friendly, a typical home will need around an acre of forest to complete the project. Plants have a natural purpose of breathing in carbon dioxide and with approximately 40 to 50 trees being cut for a each home, there can be a serious increase in carbon dioxide in the air if replacement trees aren't grown. It's accepted that it takes a lot of energy to produce the raw materials for steel but steel can be endlessly recyclable. With about two out of every three pounds of new steel recycled and new steel only needing approximately 1/3 of the energy required for wood-built homes, steel can be an environmentally friendly choice as well.
- Despite wood being used for building homes over the last few centuries, it needs a lot of treating and in certain areas it can fail in the fight against natural enemies, such as termites. Steel is not only unaffected by termites, but is also stronger against earthquakes, hurricanes and severe snow. It won't warp like wood and in the case of fire it may even prevent the outbreak, unlike wood which help flames increase.
- A common mistake for house builders is that steel is more expensive. But, while the price of lumber seems to perpetually rise, the price of steel has stayed consistent over time, helping create a more cost estimate, and perhaps a lower cost overall.
