How to Make a Wall Key Holder
- 1). Remove and discard the glass and backing from the picture frame. Measure the inside edges of the frame. Draw a rectangle matching those measurements on a piece of scrap wainscoting with a piece of chalk.
- 2). Cut along your chalk lines with a small electric handsaw. Work slowly to avoid creating wavy cuts or injury.
- 3). Brush paint or stain onto the wainscoting and frame using smooth, even strokes that go in the same direction as the grain of the wood. Allow them to dry overnight.
- 4). Count your current key rings. Calculate how many hooks you can fit on your wainscoting by dividing the space available by the number of rings you need and devising an even spacing for the hooks. For instance, if you need 8 hooks and your wainscoting is 8 inches wide by 16 inches long, plan to place key hooks in either eight columns 1 inch apart, or in 4 columns 2 inches apart, with an identical row underneath.
- 5). Make chalk dots in a grid on your wainscoting to mark where each key hook goes. Drill about 1/4 inch down into each dot with a 1/16-inch-diameter drill bit. Screw one teacup hook into each hole, tugging on each gently afterward to check that it's secure.
- 6). Run a bead of wood glue around the back inside edge of your picture frame. Press the wainscoting into it and let it dry for 24 hours. Hang your new wall key holder in the entryway.
