Ideas for Avocados
- Guacamole is a refreshing and healthy dip for chips and veggies, but it is not the only savory food you can make from avocados. For breakfast, add avocado slices to your eggs Benedict and use avocado in the Hollandaise sauce to replace some of the animal fat. Smear some mashed avocado on your toast or bagel, or use it as a sandwich spread. Try battered and deep-fried avocado slices as an appetizer. Replace the mayonnaise in deviled eggs with mashed avocado for a heart healthy version. Make a refreshing avocado soup that is thick and creamy, without adding cream. Try avocado sauce on top of a pizza, or add it to macaroni and cheese for an extra creamy pasta main dish. To top off a steak, use mashed avocado in place of high fat butter.
- Although not sweet, avocado is a fruit so don't forget to add avocado to your desserts. Replace animal fats, like butter and lard, in your favorite sweet bread and cake recipes like the California Avocado Commission's "avocanana" bread recipe. Throw avocado in your blender, along with fruits and berries, for a creamy smoothie or avocado milkshake. The creaminess of the avocado flesh lends itself to rich puddings and mousses and it goes really well with chocolate. With the addition of some sugar, avocado can make a delicious ice cream or pie filling.
- Not just for food, the fats and oils in avocado make it a luxurious moisturizing base for natural beauty products. Mix avocado flesh with an egg yolk and apply as a moisturizing facial and hair mask. Add a little milk to the avocado and egg yolk mixture to create a facial cleanser you can use to wash away the toxins your skin has accumulated during the day. Rub the inner lining of the avocado skin on your face and hands, depositing the moisturizing oils on your skin. Leave on for at least 15 minutes for full moisturizing benefits. Relax with avocado slices under your eyes to reduce puffiness. Massage mashed avocado flesh into your aching muscles to help you relax or rub it on to sunburned skin for relief. You can also use mashed avocado flesh as a natural shaving cream.
- Use the seed from your avocado to grow your own avocado tree. Remove the seed from your avocado and wash it. Using four toothpicks, suspend the seed large-side down over a glass of water so that the water covers half of the seed. Place the glass in a warm place, out of direct sunlight, and check every day to make sure the water level is maintained. After about six weeks, the seed will sprout roots and a stem and start to grow into a plant that can be transferred to a pot filled with soil. It can take seven to 15 years for an avocado tree grown at home to yield fruit, and some might not ever grow avocados, but the foliage can make a pleasing houseplant. Keep in mind that avocado seeds, leaves and bark have been found to be toxic to pets. Keep your new houseplant out of reach of animals and small children.
