Financial Help for Single Mothers and Single Fathers

103 13
Single parents are people who for one reason or another are the single custodians of a child or children who are the offspring of the marriage.
In the fifties and sixties, it was hard for fathers to get custody of their children, and a single mother didn't have the same fears as in almost all cases the mother was given custody.
Here are five facts on single parenting in the US today: A single father has the same rights as a single mother to claim paternity and his rights are essentially the same as a mother's except that they might be harder to enforce as the mother has a biological connection to the child.
A father has to establish paternity before he can exercise his rights fully.
If he was married to the child's mother at the time of conception, he will need to establish paternity through the state's Office of Child Support Enforcement (OCSE) which will automatically open the door to his right to request visitation, as well as his right and duty to support the child.
If the father slips up on support payments and disappears off the radar, leaving no known address and absconds, a single mother has the right to apply to locate him through the Department of Motor Vehicles and state employment agencies and can pursue monies owed to her through the state court system.
If a single stay-at-home mom wants to pursue further education, she can apply for a Pell grant which does not have to be paid back.
A Pell grant allows a single mother to work at home, but also look after her children.
All she needs is a computer and an internet connection.
A grant for a single mother can be up to $5,500, with a further $10,000 scholarship if she qualifies.
The purpose of the Pell grant is to offer deserving single moms a scholarship to improve her level of education and to secure a job to change her circumstances.
A single mother can obtain a mortgage if she is financially disadvantaged, as well as a government grant which comes in the form of a no-interest loan of between $5,000 and $20,000 for a down payment.
Please note that there is a difference between a grant and a loan.
A grant is free.
A loan has to be paid back.
This means that you don't have to repay the Pell Grant, but must repay the loan.
Did you know that a single father has the right to prevent third-party adoption? If you were unmarried and your ex-partner was pregnant with a child you believe is yours, you can prevent the adoption of that child.
If the natural father of the child does not care and is voluntarily absent from the child's life and the mother wishes to remarry and go on with her life, a stepfather might be permitted to file for adoption.
There are more rights today for fathers of divorce.
They have amply proven themselves to be as caring and as nurturing as single mothers.
