    Walls

    • Walls are the largest expanse of decorative space in your child's room. Take advantage of that fact by painting them the color of the child's favorite team. Most home improvement stores offer color palettes of big-name teams. If the team has more than one color, add the second color through bedding, window treatments or even a simple stripe painted around the room. Frame a poster of the team mascot or your child's favorite player. Hang a pendant over the doorway or window. A team jersey encased in a Plexiglas box can serve as a focal point. Team calendars, schedules, rosters and newspaper articles can all be framed and hung. Paint a simple scoreboard, football field or basketball court on one wall for an added decorative element. If painting is not your thing, hang a mural of the sport for a burst of color in the room.

    Bedding

    • Bedding featuring team logos are available for all professional football and basketball teams and many college teams. If logo-covered bedding makes the room look too busy, cover the bed with a simple bedspread in one of the team colors. Use sheets and pillowcases in the team's secondary color, and you're in keeping with the theme.

    Window Treatments

    • Select football or basketball themed curtains or valances. Again, if themed curtains make the space look too busy, opt for solid color curtains or valances that match the bedding. You can make your own themed curtain rods by cutting a wooden dowel rod to size and attaching small footballs or basketballs to the end. A small decal like you might normally use on the back window of your car can be placed in a corner of the window for just a hint of team spirit.

    Floors

    • An area rug in the shape of a football or basketball would help add to the sports-related theme of the decor. If you have wood floors, you can paint a football field complete with yard lines or a basketball court. Simply seal it with polyurethane floor sealer, let it dry thoroughly and it's safe to walk on.

    Accessories

    • Accents for the room are practically limitless when decorating in a football or basketball theme. Pieces of sports equipment, an old gym locker, a colorful lampshade, team throw pillows or blanket and a clock featuring the logo of your child's favorite team are just a few of the ways to accessorize.
