Latch hook tool

• The tool used to create the projects is a latch hook. The device is held in the hand, usually has a wooden handle with a metal hook similar to a knitting needle. There is a hinged clasp on the hook which allows the precut yarn to catch and be pulled through the grid-shaped canvas.
  
  

How a project is made

• Typically the latch hook projects come in a boxed set with precut yarn, latch hook tool and stamped canvas. An instruction booklet usually details where each color of yarn should be placed on the canvas.
  
  

Latch hook sizes

• Latch hooks come in different sizes and should be purchased to coordinate with your latch hook canvas grid. As of 2011, latch hooks sell for between $2 and $5. Some common sizes include 6.25, 6.5 and 6.75 inches. Latch hooks are also sold with a straight latch or bent latch.
  
  

Do it yourself

• It's not necessary to buy a kit to make a latch hook project. Purchase latch hook canvas separately and you can make your own yarn pieces by cutting several stacks into pre-measured lengths. Using different length of yarn can give your project depth. It also allows you to use various sizes of latch hooks adding dimension to your custom creation.
