How to Reduce Birds Hitting Windows
- 1). Remove any reflective coating that may be on your windows. Since birds are attracted to the clear reflective nature of glass, glass that has a dark reflective coating has a high probability of inviting a bird collision. If the glass does not reflect the clouds and sky, the birds are less likely to crash into it.
- 2). Add a screen or netting to the window. Not all windows will be able to accommodate a screen being attached, however, by attaching a screen or some sort of netting to the window, you will interrupt the clear reflection of the outside world on the glass. Also, if there is enough room between the screen or netting and the window, the bird will be able to bounce off of it, thus not hitting the window.
- 3). Add decals or other objects to the window. Many people will add one or two bird-shaped decals to their windows to detract birds. However, in order for the decals to be effective, there needs to be enough decals to cover a large percentage of the window. The decals need to be close together without large gaps where the reflection of the glass would show through. A decoration attached with a suction cup will also work. According to FLAP, if the bird sees something moving that is attached to the window, they will realize that there is a structure there and will not mistake the clear window for a passage they could fly through.
- 4). Make a pattern on your window with string, tape or etching the glass itself. Interrupt the clear reflection with some sort of pattern on the glass or on top of the glass. The pattern will help the birds see that it is not a clear passage for them to fly through.
- 5). Distract the birds with something else they like. Birds love feeders and bird baths. Place bird feeders or bird baths far enough away from windows where the birds would not miss them and run into the window instead. Feeders and bird baths will be least likely to cause a crash if they are far away from a home or structure.
- 6). Prepare the inside of the home. Although it is not the inside of the home that the birds are interested in, you can attempt to decrease the reflective quality of the glass by having light-colored shades or curtains drawn. Also, do not keep plants by the windows that birds could mistake as being outside.
