How to Use Palm Fronds for Survival

    Shelter

    • 1). Pick up any materials available, including branches, scrap metal or shipwreck debris.

    • 2). Lash a frame together out of these materials with plant fiber or rope, if you have it.

    • 3). Weave the palm fronds into the frame. They will provide shade and, if carefully placed in a shingling arrangement, shelter you from rain as well.

    Smoke Signals

    • 1). Collect the driest palm fronds you can find.

    • 2). Build a fire circle out of stones to keep your surroundings from catching fire.

    • 3). Place the palm fronds in the fire pit and light them, or place them atop any paper or twigs that will light more easily and light them. The smoke may be visible to people in the distance or passing airplanes or helicopters.

    Cook

    • 1). Wrap fish or vegetables in fresh, green palm fronds.

    • 2). Tie the food packet closed with torn strips of another palm frond.

    • 3). Place the food package on or near the flames of a fire. The fronds will prevent your food from becoming scorched and keep it moist as it cooks.

    Water

    • 1). Tie a plastic bag around a frond on a palm tree to cause water to evaporate from the frond and condense inside the bag.

    • 2). Remove the bag periodically and empty it into a water vessel.

    • 3). Roll another palm frond into a funnel and use it to funnel rain water into a water vessel. This increases the surface area you have available for catching the water.
