Ostrich Zoo Facts
- In part because it is so large, the ostrich is flightless. But it is known for its quick feet. An ostrich can sprint up to 43 miles per hour and can run at a steady 31 miles per hour. The ostrich also has a strong kick--strong enough to kill a lion. Ostriches have lifespans of 30 to 40 years.
- Zoos across the United States are home to ostriches. The San Diego Zoo, the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, and the Philadelphia Zoo are just a few of the places where you can see and learn more about ostriches. In captivity, ostriches can live 50 years.
- Ostriches don't actually bury their heads in the sand. When they are threatened and cannot run away fast enough, ostriches lay on the ground with their heads against the sand. Because of the color of their necks, they blend into the sand, and from a distance it can appear as if an ostrich has buried its head.
