How to Grow Organic Mushrooms
- 1). Prepare an area in a cool, dark room to grow the mushrooms, such as a basement, cabinet, pantry or closet. Most mushrooms prefer temperatures between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit; as long as the temperature is less than 80 degrees F, the mushrooms should grow fine.
- 2). Soak the mushroom growing medium in cold, non-chlorinated water for two to three hours.
- 3). Move the growing medium to a flat surface where you intend to grow the mushrooms. Place the mushroom medium inside a container that will prevent the water from leaking onto the surface where the mushrooms are placed. Make sure the room stays dark most of the time. A little sunlight should not cause problems.
- 4). Keep the growing medium moist. If the growing medium dries out, the mushrooms will not sprout. Check the medium every one to two days and water with a watering can, when necessary.
- 5). Harvest the mushrooms when they pop out of the ground. For many varieties of mushrooms, this will be within one week. Other varieties take longer to sprout, sometimes closer to a month. Snip the mushrooms at the base with scissors or pinch them off with your fingers. Wash the mushrooms before eating.
