Basketball Practice - Day 2
Summary:
Warm-up and Strectching (5 min.):
Have the players jog the perimeter of the court and then get in a circle for stretching. Do the same stretches as the last practice.
Shooting (15 min.):
Teach the players how to do a lay-up properly, starting with the right side.
Demonstrate by breaking it down, step by step. Emphasize the fact that they cannot take more than two steps, that they shouldn't be under the basket when they shoot, and that they should try to aim for the square on the backboard (if there is one) over the basket. Divide the group in half and have one line shooting and the other line rebounding for them.
Passing (10 min.):
Demonstrate the bounce pass. Remind them about passing to someone who is looking, calling out that person's name before they pass and, if they are receiving a pass, having their hands up making a target for the passer. The receiver should go towards the ball, and not just wait for it to get to them. Then, have them partner up and pass back and forth, first with bounce passes and then with chest passes. Also, you may want to explain when each of these passes might be used.
Water Break (5 min.):
Rebounding (10 min.):
Explain what boxing out is and how it relates to rebounding. Make sure they know not to grab or hold the other player.
Also, show them how to pull down a rebound correctly, catching it high, and bringing it down with their elbows out, the ball at their chin.
For this drill, have the kids partner up. Then designate who is on offense and who is on defense. Line them up around the three point line, with the defensive player facing the offensive player. As soon as you yell "shot", have the defensive player turn around and box out the offensive player. Then, yell "rebound" and have the defender jump as high as they can, as if rebounding and bring the "ball" down properly.
Ball Handling (7 min.):
Demonstrate a jump stop. Emphasize being low, in triple threat, and being balanced and under control. Split them into two lines and have them dribble to half court and back. This time, have them jump stop before they pass it to the next person in line.
Zone Defense (8 min.):
Review the 2-1-2 defense. Split the group into two teams and have a controlled scrimmage-type game, where the offense can move around and pass and shoot. Try to get the defense to yell "shot" when the ball is shot and box out. Switch offense and defense half way through.
