    • 1). Slide the hold switch on the top of the iPod to the locked position. With the iPod facing you, move the hold switch to the right. You should see an orange color appear beside the switch.

    • 2). Using a plastic opening tool, free the retainer clip on the bottom of the iPod by inserting it between the plastic front and metal back case. Point the tool's edge toward the metal back case to prevent scratching of the plastic front.

    • 3). To remove the remaining retaining clips, insert the opening tool into each side of the iPod and wiggle it while moving it sideways. Use caution when inserting the opening tool near the hold switch.

    • 4). With all the retainer clips loose, slightly open the two halves of the iPod apart. Two cables still connect the halves together. Use caution not to damage the cables.

    • 5). Using the opening tool, slide up the brown connector that holds the orange battery ribbon cable in place. Slide the connector directly upward to prevent damage. Lift the brown connector up about 1 to 2 millimeters to free it. Remove the cable.

    • 6). Place the two halves of the iPod side by side, with the inside of each facing upward. You should now have one remaining orange cable (headphone jack ribbon) attached.

    • 7). Lift up the iPod's hard drive. This procedure will expose where the headphone jack ribbon goes into the connector. Use the iPod opening tool to gently lift the brown tab of the connector. Lift up the tab 90 degrees to release the ribbon cable. Use your fingers to remove the cable. Both halves of the iPod should be completely free.

    • 8). Using caution not to damage any ribbon cables, insert the opening tool between the metal case and battery. Lightly wiggle the opening tool and push it further between the battery and case. This process should slowly pry the battery loose from the adhesive that holds it to the back case.

    • 9). Install the new battery to the back case in the exact position where the old one was removed.

    • 10

Attach the headphone-jack ribbon cable back into the connector. Use the opening tool to move the brown tab back down.

    • 11

Insert the battery ribbon cable back into the connector. Use the opening tool to slide the connector back down.

Carefully press all of the iPod's retainer clips back together. This process will rejoin the front and back cases of the iPod.
