Cedar Shingle Siding Installation
- 1). Place a cedar shingle up against the bottom of the house, or bottom of the area you are covering, to determine where the bottom row should be located. Have it overlap other material below it or hang off the bottom edge of the wall by 2 inches. Mark the spot and lay the shingle down.
- 2). Place a chalk line at the mark and adjust it to be horizontal to the ground. Check it with a level, and then snap it to place the line on the wall.
- 3). Place shingles on the line and nail them to the wall. Place the nails at the top of the shingle 1 inch from the edge. Use two nails. Leave a 1/8-inch gap between the shingles to allow for expansion.
- 4). Start the second row by cutting the first shingle in half, using a saw. This will help create a row that's staggered from the first one so you don't have a straight-line seam. Repeat the procedure described in Steps 3 and 4 as you go all the way up the wall.
- 5). Stagger the corners so there is no seam running down the edge. Do this by alternating which side of the corner has a shingle even with the corner. The side with a shingle that's not even with the corner will lie over the one that is. Alternating this pattern will leave a staggered seam on the end. If a shingle on the corner is too long, trim it off with a knife.
- 6). Nail a trim piece across the top of the top row to hide the ends of the shingles.
