How to Design a Home Salon
- 1). Review your available funds and borrowing potential to determine how much money you have to spend on decorating, remodeling, creating and designing your salon.
- 2). Make a list of the necessary items required to operate the salon, such as chairs for cutting and styling hair, sinks to wash hair, hair drying stations, reception and waiting areas, counters for tools and equipment, mirrors and storage space for all supplies.
- 3). Visit other salons to get ideas about color options and design styles. Take a notebook with you, and make lists about the things you like and dislike about other salons. Keep in mind that you may have to scale down some design ideas based on the space available in your house.
- 4). Measure the space in your house that will be used as a salon. Choose an area with a separate entrance or closest to a door to avoid having people walking through your house during operating hours. Use a basement with an entrance if available. This will help keep traffic, chemical smells and activity out of your main living area. One option is to convert your garage into a work area with insulated walls, power and water.
- 5). Write all measurements on a large, white sheet of paper. Sketch in the primary work elements, such as hair cutting stations, waiting area chairs, hair washing basins and hair drying stations. Include in your sketch where the counters will go and all built-in cabinets and storage areas. Note on your drawing where the doors and windows are located.
- 6). Choose a color theme for the home salon, using paint chips from your local home improvement store. Keep in mind that the style will need to match the rest of your house if the area is located near your main living areas. If the salon is in a basement or garage, be creative in designing the theme of the salon. Use neutral colors for walls, window treatments and flooring. Accent the area with colorful decorations such as pictures, wall art and throw rugs.
- 7). Install or update lighting so there are bright lights throughout the salon to ensure hair coloring and highlighting satisfies clients. This is especially important when your home salon is in a basement without natural light.
- 8). Include touches such as tables with magazines, a coffee machine and condiment station, overstuffed and comfortable waiting room chairs, coat racks, purse holders, bowls of candy and candles or potpourri to give the space an inviting fragrance.
