How to Care for Greek Oregano

    • 1). Cultivate the planting area in the spring after the soil begins to warm. Work the soil down to a depth of about 4 inches with the garden spade. Add 2 to 3 inches of compost over the soil and mix the compost and soil thoroughly with the garden spade. Rake the surface smooth.

    • 2). Scatter the oregano seeds evenly over the soil. Do not cover the seeds with soil, allowing necessary sunlight for germination.

    • 3). Water the soil lightly and keep it evenly moist while the seeds germinate.

    • 4). Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings after the seeds germinate. Greek oregano prefers slightly dry soil.

    • 5). Harvest leaves as you need them after the plants become at least 6 inches tall. Clip terminal stems down to the bottom pair of leaves and the plant will respond with new growth from the cut point.

    • 6). Cut the plants down to soil level at the end of the growing season. Use the oregano leaves fresh or hang the stems upside down in bunches to dry them.
