Model Railroading - A Many-Sided Hobby

Railway modelling is a very popular occupation for young and old.
I remember when I was a boy how exited I was when I got a train set.
When you become older it can become a fascinating hobby.
A start set contains one locomotive, some wagons and sometimes one or two switches and a buffer.
The tracks are mostly laid on the floor or a dining table.
To make a station with as much as possible tracks is the first thing you often do.
And when you finished playing the train is tied away.
When you become more seriously in model railroading you build your own table for the railway.
The best thing is to have a special room or ceiling for your model railroading.
When you are more advanced you can work with Digital Control Systems (DCS) to control your trains, switches and semaphores.
You must first decide which scale for the train you will use.
Most common is the HO scale (1:87) You can also use smaller or larger scales.
The smaller N scale ranges from 1:148 to 1:160.
Mostly an oval track is the base of many railway-layouts.
A table with a surface of 4x8 foot is sufficient as a start.
With two switches you can already make passing sidings for running two trains.
A much used layout is a double oval so you can let the train come from a different direction.
Of course you need also some tracks for good-trains and a yard for industry spurs.
Exiting is also up and down grades for your landscape and bridges.
With a model railway you try to recreate some piece that exist in reality.
A small station in the neighbourhood can be an example.
To make it realistic trains must come from somewhere, a place that is distracted from the eye.
A way to reach this effect is using a tunnel.
You can also make big buildings or factories.
Advanced layouts have parts of the railroad 'underground' so there are two levels of layouts.
An important part of the layout is the entourage.
There are endless possibilities for constructing model train landscapes.
You can buy ready made houses, bridges, tunnels and stations but with some creativity you can make a lot yourself from all kind of materials.
Model railroading needs a lot of work, you must have a lot of patience, it also develops creative and technical properties.
It's a very interesting hobby indeed.
