Eyelets and Grommets

Definition: For those that don't know, grommets and eyelets are rings, usually metal, that are inserted into a hole made through another material - usually paper of fabric. They may be used to reinforce the hole or simply for decorative purposes. These days, eyelets are a popular design element used in scrapbooking, but they can also be used as a design element when working with fabric.

While some people think that eyelets and grommets are the same thing, grommets are usually bigger, have a wider 'rim', and look more industrial than eyelets.

Grommets are usually used for additional holding strength in high stress applications such as tents, banners and flags. Eyelets are usually the first choice when it comes to garments, hats, shoes and paper projects. So, which one is right for you? It all depends on your personal preferences and the project at hand!

The tools needed to apply eyelets and grommets are similar, one is just a little bigger than the other! First you need either a hole puncher or a craft knife to make a small hole in your fabric. You then poke the eyelet or grommet (usually with a washer) through the hole, and then tap a setter using a small hammer or rubber mallet.
