    Manual Machines

    • Sizzix (sizzix.com), Quickutz (quickutz.com) and AccuCut (accucut.com) are a few of the industry-leading personal die-cutting machines. Using purchased die-cut shapes -- sold separately from the manual machines and typically brand specific -- you can apply downward pressure on to the die-cut, and the blades will engage the paper and cut out your shape. Manual machines have been replaced by electronic die-cutting machines that were adapted from the sign-making industry.

    Electronic Machines

    • Electronic die cutting machines use software to digitally cut your desired shape. You no longer have to buy individual shapes you would like to use as a die-cut but can now select from thousands of shapes, patterns and letters within the preinstalled software. There are two different types of electronic machines: one that requires ink cartridges and one that does not.

    Pros

    • Die-cut machines deliver creativity to card makers because you can design any shape, pattern or letter you want. Both the manual and electronic machines produce perfectly cut images that look professional. Die-cutting machines allow you to make identical invitations or cards with the time-saving process. Some die-cutting machines offer crafters other functions to include embossing and the ability to die-cut fabric material.

    Cons

    • There is an up-front expense when you purchase your die-cutting machine, but it can pay off for you in the future because you will no longer need to purchase the shapes, patterns and letters you can now make at home. If you purchase an electronic machine, you will need to be somewhat computer savvy as it is a software-based program. Some local craft stores offer classes and tutorials on the machines they sell.
