Do Supplements Impact Breast Cancer Prognosis?

The next time you wonder if purchasing all those supplements is worth the added expense to the family budget, remind yourself about the scientific validation and the benefits of supplementation.

An article recently published in Breast Cancer Research and Treatments reported that specific supplementation after the traditional cancer treatment for breast cancer helped to improve survival rates. A group of Harvard University graduates studied data from over 12,000 breast cancer survivors who chose to use supplements for at least 1 year after the initial diagnosis. Here is a summary of their findings:

Vitamin E was associated with a decrease risk of recurrence
Vitamin C was associated with decreased risk of death
The risk of breast cancer recurrence was 36% less with women supplementing with vitamin D.

Although this study has some positive significant impact on the benefits of supplementation with some basic nutrients, there are so many other nutrients that can be incorporated into your diet that can not only help you heal from breast cancer, but can actually turn on protective genes. Here are a few more examples of the power of healing substances supplied by Mother Nature:

EGCG found in green tea inhibits glucose uptake and metabolism of breast cancer cells. We know that sugar feeds cancer, so this component of green tea helps to protect against sugar uptake by cancer cells, even with ER negative breast tumors. EGCG has even been shown to induce cell death to breast cancer cells.
In view of this research, enjoy 2-3 cups of organic green tea every day.
Cruciferous vegetables, but more specifically broccoli and broccoli sprouts, cause breast cancer cells to die. The main component that is responsible for this reaction is Sulforaphane. It actually inhibits human breast cancer cell growth and decreases the expression of certain proteins that cause breast cancer growth.
A grape extract called resveratrol has a weakening effect on breast cancer cell growth.
Increased olive oil consumption exhibited a protective effect on breast cancer among women living on the Canary Islands, even though the incidences of breast cancer are higher there than those in the rest of Spain.
Melatonin, mostly known as the sleep hormone, is classified as a cytotoxic hormone. It is a very powerful hormone that inhibits breast cancer cell growth and causes breast cancer cells to die. Women who work night shifts tend to have higher incidences of breast cancer, more than likely because of the lowered melatonin production.
One of my favorite Tumor Terminators is curcumin, found in turmeric (which you can buy in the produce section of many grocery stores). It has anti-tumoral effects against some aggressive and recurrent breast cancers and causes apoptosis (cell death) to breast cancer cells.

The science behind evidence-based natural medicine is proof that Nature has provided us with everything we need to heal our body. Why does traditional medicine refuse to keep up with the research and implement less toxic therapies? Because it cannot patent a plant or an herb and therefore Big Pharma has no interest in what is best for the patient. It would rather feed greedily on the demise of millions of cancer patients who have put their trust in mainstream medicine.

If you are on a Breast Cancer Healing Journey or are simply wanting to be Proactive with Prevention, make sure you add these nutrients to your shopping list. Check the ingredients: Buy only those supplements that are free of additives (besides the active ingredients, there should only be 2 or 3 ingredients in the product). Check to see if the supplement contains folic acid or folate. Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate, and it is poorly absorbed by many people and can even harm some people. Do not buy anything that has folic acid in it. Folate, on the other hand, is natural and good for you!
