How to Plant Thistles
- 1). Select an area that requires very little maintenance and is out of the way. Thistles' thorns will hurt you if you step on or touch them, so you won't want to be working around the plants too much.
- 2). Dig a hole in the soil that is large enough for the root ball. You don't need to amend the soil because thistles will grow in even the worst conditions.
- 3). Set the thistle in the hole, and cover the root ball with soil. Be sure to wear gardening gloves to protect your hands from the thorns. Push the soil down firmly around the thistle with your hands.
- 4). Water the thistle. Water daily for the first week. After that, you can pull back to several times per week. Thistles don't mind drought conditions once they've become established in an area.
