How to Carve Out the Toe-End of a Wooden Clog
- 1). Measure the length and width of your feet: Stand on a paper, while someone else draws around your feet. Do not attempt to draw your own feet, as this will alter the measurement. Add a quarter of an inch to this measurement.
- 2). Measure the back of the shoe where material has already been removed. This measurement should be between a quarter of an inch to a half an inch.
- 3). Mark the measurements of your foot on the top of the clog. This will mark the depth that you must reach for the shoe to fit and the maximum width that will accommodate your foot.
- 4). Measure from the start of the upper to the mark for foot length you just made. Make note of this measurement for later reference.
- 1). Place a wooden block securely in a vise to stabilize the clog as you work. Pad the sides with a thin cloth to protect the wood, if desired.
- 2). Using your widest chisel, gently gouge out the waste material. As you progress further toward the toe, downsize your chisel to fine tune the shape to fit your foot.
- 3). Measure repeatedly, comparing your current depth measurement with the note you made earlier. When you've reached the noted depth, try on the clog to see if more material needs to be removed to make the shoe comfortable.
- 4). Use the rounded file to remove material, round out the toe space and optimize the clog's fit.
- 5). Sand the inside of the toe after achieving the depth needed to fit your foot. This will prevent splinters and blistering during use.
