How to Change an IPhone 2G's Battery
- 1). Use a small paper clip to remove the SIM card and holder from your Apple iPhone. Make certain the phone is powered off.
- 2). Open the case on your Apple iPhone using a small flat head screw driver or the case opening tool to pry off the back plastic panel.
- 3). Remove the three small screws from the aluminum casing. Place the screws and the back plastic panel inside a small cup. Then place the cup in a safe location.
- 4). Use the power thumb technique to remove the case from your Apple iPhone. Start near the right side of your phone away from the antenna. Use a small screwdriver and an upward motion as you press down with your thumb. The case pops open when enough pressure is applied to pry open the case.
- 5). Lift the aluminum backing off. You should see a ribbon cable connected to the aluminum case. Set the two halves side by side and then remove the clear rubber glue covering the battery connections.
- 6). Let your soldering iron heat up for about 10 minutes. Apply the iron to the areas where the battery wires are connected to the system board. Use the iron on the solder joint that connects to the system board. When you're done, you are able to remove the battery from your phone.
- 7). Add a thin layer of solder on each end of the new replacement battery. Use the soldering iron to place a extremely thin layer of solder on each end of the replacement battery wires. To prevent the replacement battery from shorting out, do not add a layer to the last red wire until the other two wires are soldered into place.
- 8). Check the wire order on the new replacement battery to see where they should go into the connections. Use the soldering iron to heat a wire along the joint, while placing it into the connection. Repeat the process for each wire. Keep in mind that after connecting the red wire, your iPhone may not power on correctly. Replace the back plastic panel and hold down the “Home” and “Power” buttons simultaneously for approximately eight seconds to reboot the phone.
- 9). Place the new replacement battery into your iPhone. Replace the system board, parts and screws that you removed. Test your Apple iPhone before replacing the back plastic panel to see if the device is working properly. Recharge the battery for approximately three hours or longer before using the phone.
