    • 1). Cut four lengths of hemp --- two strands will form the base of the necklace and two strands will form the knots. Cut two of the lengths about the same length as the finished piece will be. Cut the other two lengths so they are five to six times the length of the finished piece.

    • 2). Tie the four strands together, leaving 4 inches of hemp behind the knot. You will braid this later to finish the piece. Arrange the strands so that the two long pieces are on either side of the two shorter pieces of hemp.

    • 3). Begin your knot by folding the rightmost strand over the two middle strands and under the leftmost strand. Bring the left strand under the two middle strands and over the right strand. Pull the knot tight.

    • 4). Fold the left strand over the two middle strands and under the right strand. Bring the right strand under the middle strands and over the left strand and pull the knot tight.

    • 5). Repeat steps 3 and 4 to complete your necklace, pausing only when you want to insert a bead.

    • 6). Insert beads at even intervals throughout the necklace. To do this, thread both the middle strands into the bead and allow the left and right strands to hug the bead on either side. Once the bead is in place, continue knotting, using the two knots described in steps 3 and 4.

    • 7). Finish the necklace by tying one final knot. Braid the strands together to form the tie for the necklace. Use the extra 4 inches at the top of the necklace and braid an additional 4 inches at the bottom of the necklace. Secure the ends with small knots and trim off the excess hemp.
