About Gears And Their Types
A gear is basically a part of a machine that facilitates movement and transmits torque in conjunction with another gear. The part consists of teeth or cogs that mesh with another part having matching teeth.
A gear is a machine in simple form which in conjunction with another such machine creates transmission. The gears are also known as transmission gears. The transmission creates mechanical advantage a gear ratio (small & big gears).
The simple machine enables change of speed, altered power source direction. The best example of this are gears in automobiles the change of gear here changes mechanical advantage. Many gear systems have a rack which is toothed but non rotating. The rack can mesh with gears in order to produce translation.
There are many types of gears used in the industries. Most common types are internal and external gears. The difference lies in the fact that external gears have teeth on the outside while and internal gear has teeth inside in the cone.
Helical gears unlike spur gears the protruding edges are not parallel to the axis but at an angle. The helical gears run smoothly as angle edges engage gradually during action. Helical gears can take greater torque than spur gears. Due to the noise and stress spur gears usage is in low speed application. For high level power transmission usage of helical gears is preferred. In order to overcome axial thrust difficulty double helical gears are used nowadays.
In case of double helical gears each set of ridges are a mirror image of the other. As each part moves in opposite direction the thrust is removed. The degree of difficulty in manufacturing is higher for double helical gears hence they are costly.
Bevel gears the teeth of the bevel gears are cut into variety of shapes unlike helical and spur gears. Other forms of bevel gears are spiral bevel gears and crown gears.
Gear materials: The materials used in manufacture of gears are usually cast iron, non ferrous alloys, plastic and metallurgical powder. For high strength out put the most commonly used material is steel.
Gears accord a definite velocity ratio hence they are preferred over V Belts and traction devices. The discovery of gear took place long time ago during circa 50 AD as per earliest known texts in Greece. But before this we know the usage was there in BC era in the Greek mechanics.
This extremely useful machinery part is in widespread in the industry as of today. Due to its functional benefit its usage is preferred over other devices. With further advance in science and technology the tools will find much greater usage in all industries.
